Just a Swingin’! FORE!
Annual Mayor’s Cup Golf Tournament takes place at The Lakes Country Club
STORY BY: AMI BROWN
The Mayor’s Cup Golf Tournament is in Full Swing! The annual fundraiser golf tournament brings golfers from all over the country, being one of the biggest events in Boiling Springs Lakes! Each year the tournament grows, and this year up to 35 teams are expected.
This event started out over 15 years ago and is still going strong today. It’s a grass roots, family oriented day of fun. Original- ly designed to assist local families in need and local projects needing extra funding. The Community Center was the beneficiary for several years and the annual tournament played a major role in that construction. Today is no exception; all the funds are kept locally for the enjoyment of the community.
The Special Events Committee hosts several events throughout the year. This is one of their largest and most anticipated fundraisers. For more info about events in BSL events, check out the website: www.cityofbsl.org
Mayor Joan Kinney created the original tournament and the name stuck. Every year you will find the current mayor participating. This year we will all be looking out for the current Mayor, Craig Caster to join the event as usual.
The tournament receives donations and sponsorship from local businesses. The support from the community really makes this a big draw for area residents. Spectators are welcome to cheer on the teams, or at least high five them as they walk by!
I know very little about golf, so please forgive the misuse of terminology – but here it goes.
Since this is a Captain’s Choice / Scramble, each team member tees off and proceeds to the spot of the best drive
and that is where everyone hits their next ball. This continues for each shot until the ball is sunk. So you can have a bad shot or two, and still do pretty well!
It’s also a “Shotgun” start. This is perfect for larger tournaments like this because everyone starts at a different hole. This reduces wait times and with this heat, no one needs to be standing around for hours. Eighteen holes usually only takes about four hours, and that’s the time goal with the entire tournament as well.
If you are wondering, there will be lots of cash prizes to be won. And since it’s a “Flighted After Play” scoring format, every handicap has a chance of winning something. This is really my kind of tournament!
The entry fee is only $55, and that includes a hamburger & hotdog BBQ lunch afterwards and award ceremony following. Grab your gloves, spikes and tees, because tee off is at 9am, and there is still plenty of time to enter. You’ll be glad it’s a public tournament and open to any amateur at any skill level. (No Pros Allowed) So get all your golfing buddies together, select your teams of four and register today! This is the perfect way to enjoy the sport, make a few new friends, connect with the community and have some fun along the way.
