Looking out for Loggerheads
“Friends of Sea Turtles – Oak Island” is a newly formed non-profit organization made up of concerned volunteers of the Sea Turtle Program in Oak Island.
As you would expect, it takes money and many volunteers to make sure the turtles are protected before, during and after the hatching process and safely get into the ocean. Their survival is minimal at best once they reach the ocean, therefore, it is imperative we do everything possible while they are on land to give them at least a chance.
We have established “Friends of Sea Turtles” so we can provide financial and volunteer assistance to the Oak Island turtle program. The objective of the “Friends of the Sea Turtles” is to assist with purchase of needed supplies, work with staff on rejuvenating the Ocean Education Center, and expand the education efforts in regards to sea turtle conservation and protection.
We have 94 Loggerhead Turtle nests at this time and still counting which will require a lot of attention. If you would like to volunteer, stop by Oak Island Recreation Department on the corner of 31st NE Street and Oak Island Drive, or call (910) 278-5518.
We need your help. Please volunteer, or if you can make a donation to “Friends of the Sea Turtle Program,” your support will be greatly appreciated. Mail checks to the address below, payable to Friends of Sea Turtles – Oak Island.
You can also help us by passing along information on “Friends of Sea Turtles.”
Thanks for your help
