Spooky October!
October Still Spooks!
Halloween and Fall events for everyone
Story by Lisa Stites (photo – Town of Oak Island)
Halloween is a great chance for kids of all ages to use their imagination and play a character for a day. Besides the typical trick-or-treat fun on the holiday itself, many groups in the area are hosting special events to keep all the goblins, princesses and superheroes entertained.
Brunswick County’s Annual Fall Festival — Oct. 25
This year’s festival is packed full of fun with a cake walk, haunted trail, hay ride, kids games and other events. There will also be hot dogs, drinks and candy. The festival is Thursday, Oct. 25 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Brunswick County Government Complex Walking trail, 45 Courthouse Drive, Bolivia. The costume contest kicks off at 7 p.m. This a free event and all are invited. The rain date will be Nov. 1.
Spooktacular! — Oct. 26
Celebrate all things fall with the Town of Oak Island at Spooktacular! This year’s festival is Friday, Oct. 26 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Recreation Center, 3003 E. Oak Island Drive. All are invited to come in costume, and there will be contests, live music, games, and some special spooky haunts. Local businesses, community organizations, and school groups will be hosting booths with carnival-type activities and distributing candy and prizes to children ages 13 and younger.
Scarrison House at Fort Johnson — Oct. 26 and 27
Fort Johnston’s Garrison House turns into the ‘Scarrison House’ for Halloween. Southport’s spirits will gather at the Fort Johnston-Southport Museum (203 E. Bay Street). Are you ready to meet the ghosts of pirates, sea captains, soldiers, weeping women, and maybe more? History isn’t so scary…or is it? Scarrison House is sponsored by Brunswick Little Theatre. For a complete schedule and more information, visit www.southportnc.org
The Scarrison House will welcome all those brave enough to enter on Friday, Oct. 26 and Saturday, Oct. 27, from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. On Saturday, Oct. 27, there will also be a child-friendly Scarrison from 11:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. There is a small fee for this event.
Spook or Treat — Oct. 27
Southport also has a free festival planned, with a hayride, crafts and a super spooky haunted gym! The Spook or Treat will be Saturday, Oct. 27 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 209 N. Atlantic Avenue, Southport (beside the City gym).
Classic Cars ’n Rock ’n Roll — Oct. 27
This event doesn’t exactly fit the Halloween theme here, but it is the same weekend, and it is always a good time. The 5th Annual Classic Cars ‘n Rock’n Roll will be held in downtown Southport on Saturday, Oct. 27, so check out Spook or Treat and the car show in Southport that day. Registration for cars begins at 10 a.m., and awards will be handed out at 4 p.m. The event is open to all cars and trucks, and there will be more than 50 trophies and prizes. There will also be raffles and a 50/50. DJ Billy V will start entertaining the crowd at noon, and The Porch Rockers will provide the tunes from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.
