Wheels for Good
The Meals on Wheels Association of America, which provides meals to senior citizens with a goal to end senior hunger by 2020, is running a contest to find the best “American Volunteer.” As the association clarifies, it is searching for the Meals on Wheels volunteers who go above and beyond their “call of duty.”
“The winner of the 2013 American Volunteer Contest will be presented with the annual Jody Tepedino Nicholo Award and his or her nominating program will be presented with a check for $1,000 at the Meals on Wheels Association Annual Conference and Common Goods Expo in Boston, Massachusetts,” the contest site describes. “Second place will be presented with a check for $750 and third place will be presented with a check for $500.”
Regional programs were required to submit videos of their hardest working volunteer, describing how that person is passionately committed to serving senior citizens in their area, by July 17th. Locally, Brunswick Senior Resources Incorporated entered Dorothy Sirk, a Meals on Wheels volunteer who helped create the video for our area’s program.
“Dorothy is part of the Shallotte Meals on Wheels team where she is a devoted volunteer to seniors in Brunswick County,” Heather Howle, assistant director of The Brunswick Center at Southport, divulges.
Winners will be selected by public vote, which opened on July 18th. Voting will close on Friday, August 23rd at 5 p.m. Those wishing to vote for our local Brunswick Senior Resources can click here to vote for their video entry.
