Wooden Boat Show Time!

 

The 8th Annual Southport Wooden Boat Show – Sept. 30th 10am – 4pm

The Southport Annual Wooden Boat Show is gearing up for another superb family event. This year it’s scheduled for September 30th from 10am until 4pm, with all day events planned down at the Yacht Basin area. This event brings in thousands of visitors, not to mention craftsman from all over the US. This year looks to be another winner with fun activities for kids and adults, plenty of free fun, music, food and of course displays of immaculate workmanship. Make sure to stick around for the raffle and the prizes.
The schedule of events include:

Wooden boats on exhibit: Moore Street, Caswell Ave, and at the docks at Admirals Harbor Wooden boat Building demonstration (Cape Fear Community College): Mark Bayne and students will build a 14’ clamming skiff with cypress sides and marine plywood bottom (work will begin on Friday and continue on Saturday) Ship’s Store: Official SWBS posters, hats, and T-shirts Model Boat and Photo Exhibit Herb Harton live music on Music Stage Vendors Alley Maritime Displays, Talks & Demonstrations Duke Energy Maritime Pavilion Model Boat Building demonstrations: Robert Tuttle Net repair Half Hull display and demonstration Boat Building Camp display: Pictures of students and models Display of tools, knot boards, canvas work

11:00 am and 1:30 pm Ship-in-Bottle demonstrations: Jim Goodwin will demonstrate the art of building and inserting historic models in bottles.

12:00 pm and 2:30 pm Marlinspike Rope demonstrations: Don Van Hoy will demonstrate the use of the marlinspike and knotting.

11:30 am and 2:00 pm “Shrimping & Shrimp Boats”: April Potter at Potter’s Seafood Maritime Tents Brunswick Catch Cape Fear Museum of History and Science Coastal Water Watch and the Southport Tree Committee Ft. Fisher Underwater Archeology Lab Southport Sail and Power Squadron US Coast Guard Auxiliary Children’s Activities NC Aquarium at Fort Fisher Outreach Program Exhibit and Hands-on Activities NC Maritime Museum, Southport: NautiKids – building and sailing small wooden boats Squishy Fish – fish prints NC Maritime Museum, Beaufort: “Climb Aboard”: Kids can climb into a flat bottom skiff with sail and manipulate lines as if sailing it. “Boatbuilding Skills for Kids” An opportunity for kids to use traditional boatbuilding hand tools.

11:00 am – 2:00 pm Taste of the Cape Fear Tickets go on sale at 10:00 am, 11:00 am to 2:00 pm chowder and shrimp & grits served, $5.00 a bowl.

10:30 am – 3:30 pm Harbor Tours on the Cape Fear Boats leave from Fishy Fishy. Tickets purchased at Information Booth #2.
Morning tours: Launch Times: 10:30 am, 11:00 am, 11:30 am, 12:00 pm, 12:30 pm 20 minute tours $5 each with children accompanied by adults, Parrot Head Tours with Captain Tom Hetherington. Afternoon tours: Launch Times: 1:30 pm, 2:30 pm, 3:30 pm 40 minute tours $12 each; age 13 & up,with Captain Betsy Blee on the Encore.

3:00 pm to 3:30 pm Presentations on Music Stage by Mayor Jerry Dove Raffle Prizes Wooden Boat Awards Celebrate!

International Day of Peace Saturday, September 16, 2017 2 – 4 p.m. Franklin Square Park Opening Ceremony, Music by Jeremy Truett & Rev, Entertainment & Performances, Children’s Arts & Crafts, Art: Visions of Peace, Peace Information and Literature In the event of rain, the celebration will be held in the Southport Community Building, 223 E. Bay Street.  Peace Day Southport promotes world peace, local peace and inner peace through education, art and celebration.
