Story by LISA STITES
Spring is about new growth, renewal and fresh starts. There are plenty of opportunities this month to fully shed the remnants of winter. Get your body moving and soak up the beauty around you in the annual Lighthouse Run, and find out what you can do to help protect our piece of paradise with events scheduled around Earth Day.

Movie presentation April 19 — “A Plastic Ocean”
Our coastal communities have many organizations dedicated to helping preserve and protect our waters and wildlife. As Earth Day approaches, the Oak Island Parks and Recreation Department, the Oak Island Beach Preservation Society and Coastal Watch have teamed up to offer a free showing of “A Plastic Ocean.” The documentary explores more than 20 locations, documenting pollution by plastics and the effect on oceans.
“Plastic Oceans Foundation is a global charitable organization that aims to change the worlds’ attitude to plastic in a single generation. The organization aims to limit the demand for non-essential plastic, using the ocean as a litmus test to monitor the impact of this man-made pollution crisis on human health,” according to the group’s website.
The movie will be shown on Thursday, April 19 at 6:30 p.m. at the Oak Island Recreation Center, 3003 E. Oak Island Drive, Oak Island. Viewers should bring a reusable cup or mug to enjoy a non-alcoholic beverage or snack. To reserve a spot or to find out more details, call the Recreation Center at (910) 278-5518.

There is a course for runners, or walkers, at any level. There is the Half Marathon Run, and 1-mile, 5k and 10k Run or Walk. All the routes have Oak Island’s beautiful coastal backdrop. The Half Marathon route will not cross the bridge but will reach the Oak Island Lighthouse, and the 10k crosses Davis Canal on footbridges.
The day of the race, activities get started bright and early at 6 a.m. at Middleton park soccer fields, at the corner of Dolphin Drive and SE 46th Street. Packet pickup and registration is from 6 to 7 a.m. that morning. There is also Chalk Art at the Start during the same timeframe. From 7 a.m. to 7:45 a.m., runners and walkers can join the stretching and warm up session.
