Be The One Gala

Join your community for a gala event on February 12 designed to raise awareness of suicide prevention efforts among first responders on Feb. 12 at Oak Island’s 801 Ocean Events Center. The BE THE ONE event has two goals. The first goal is to raise money for 501(c)3 charity organizations that provide prevention and public education programs, advocacy and therapeutic support services. The second goal is to provide a positive event for all who have or our serving our community. This includes our heroes – first responders, our military, police, their families and the community that supports them.

BE THE ONE is a Red, White and Blue Gala and we encourage all guests to show their support for our heroes during this event by wearing RED for first responders, WHITE for veterans and active military or BLUE for law enforcement; this is a semi-formal event. Live music by Nashville recording artist Jordan Oaks, Christina Martinez band, food, cash bar and auction items will be a part of the evening’s festivities.

Whether they’re running into burning buildings, engaging an active shooter, giving aid to victims in a crash, or navigating crowded streets at high speeds on the way to a hospital, first responders often put their lives at risk as part of the job. And while they may recognize the inherent danger, our heroes sometimes fail to consider the toll it can take on their mental health. In 2017, more firefighters and police officers died by suicide than in the line of duty, according to a report by the Ruderman Family Foundation. In 2019, the most recent year for which the Department of Veterans Affairs has statistics, about 21 veterans a day died by suicide — and this number was before COVID-2019 brought more isolation and depression. The rate of suicide among military members and veterans is 1.5 times that of American civilians.

No gift is too small, but all gifts are valued. There are have 30 tickets reserved for local first responders, active military, and veterans to help express our gratitude for their dedication to our community and Country.
