Little Library “Irene”

Some people in the community step up and do a little bit extra. Barbara Sammons is one of those people. She and her sister created this cute little free library for anyone to enjoy. You can come and sit and read, take a book or leave a book.

Barbara tells her story and how Irene came to be:

“Several years ago I built my first Little Free Library which I named “Delilah” as that was my mom’s favorite song. Over the years, the elements had taken its toll on Delilah so I put my sister, Francine, to the task to build a new library. This new library is a re-purposed sewing machine cabinet which we now call “Irene” in memory of our mom who was an expert seamstress.

My sister painted the library, inside and out, all with a coastal theme.  With the help of our neighbor, this new library was constructed, painted and installed today (July 22). “Irene” sits proudly where Delilah once sat and is now filled with books to the delight of our neighborhood.

The library sits across the street from our home which is located at 4314 Frying Pan Road SE, Southport (off of Long Beach Road behind the Beach Road Baptist Church). The books are free to anyone who wants to take one and read one. We keep it stocked with various books, both for adults and children.”
